From a simple and rudimentary wood-made spoon to the sophistication and skill applied in weapons, lavish clothing, or decorative artwork, age-old elements once part of daily life are now priceless and likely part of rare collections. The traditions passed down to the next generations by these masters\u2014combined with the steady introduction of new technologies and techniques\u2014<strong>boosts progress while retaining identity and sense-of-place<\/strong>. Often, these shameful losses also chip away the intellectual property of those civilizations and their traditions. This is exactly why we give\u00a0<strong>tremendous importance to the Almacenistas in Jerez<\/strong>, and the inestimable\u00a0<strong>contributions to the winemaking legacy<\/strong>\u00a0that the region still has to offer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But what is an\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Almacenista<\/strong><\/em><strong>?<\/strong>\u00a0The actual term (the legal definition is: Bodega de Crianza y Almacenado) may suggest a meaning related to the activity that these specific producers have been carrying out for centuries:\u00a0<strong>craftsmen and women dedicated to aging<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>wines in the Marco de Jerez<\/strong>\u2026 small, artisanal, family-owned, run by prominent individuals\u2026 and that hold with pride some of the highest-quality wines to be found in the whole denomination of origin. To fully appreciate the singularity of sherry wines, one must first know the long and consequential role of the Almacenistas in the Triangle. Their\u00a0<strong>nature is complex<\/strong>\u00a0and subject to the owners\u2019 personal decisions,\u00a0<strong>based on<\/strong>, say, family traditions, or actual capacity limits, with some choosing to perform a broad spectrum of business models. Some may have vineyards and produce wines solely from their own grapes, age them at will, and then sell them out in bulk on their premises while others may sustain their supplies by buying young wines from large base-wine producers (like the Cooperatives), to then sell their aged wines to a single (or a few) Bodegas de Crianza y Expedici\u00f3n (Sherry Houses) years later. The possibilities they have are many, and there is a \u2018personal\u2019 component that might have determined the scope of their activity at a specific time in history. As an expert in the subject\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sjevansmw\/\">Sarah Jane Evans MW<\/a>\u00a0stated years ago: \u201c<em>It\u2019s hard to find an Almacenista. Their bodegas are hidden behind anonymous doors in the sherry towns. Like Jerez as a whole, they have also lived through multiple events over the centuries, some of them quite tumultuous to say the least. Although the exact time of their origin isn\u2019t clear because of their evolving essence and adaptability, we know they stood as a key force of the local industry for many decades, and\u00a0<strong>their craftsmanship has clearly prevailed till our times<\/strong>. It\u2019s around the late 1800s when everything seemed to start looking down.<\/p>\n<p>By the mid-19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, there were three distinctive organizations of people devoted to some of the processes, from grape-growing and wine production to sales:\u00a0<em><strong>Cosecheros<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0(growers)<\/strong>,\u00a0<em><strong>Almacenistas\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>(winemakers\/stockholders) and\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Extractores<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0(traders)<\/strong>. The first ones were focused on tending the vineyards and growing and harvesting the grapes. The second were taking care of vinifying the grapes and aging the wines for up to a decade or more. On the other hand, as we explained in our previous article named:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sherryjourney.com\/how-is-sherry-aged-aging-sherry\/\">How is sherry aged?<\/a>, the more extended\u00a0<em><strong>a\u00f1ada<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0aging method of the era commenced to transition into the currently-widely-utilized Sistema de\u00a0<strong>Solera y Criaderas<\/strong>, a dynamic aging system that aimed to readily obtain wines with a higher degree of consistency. This, along with the invention of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sherryjourney.com\/sherry-flor-the-veil-of-flor-and-what-is-flor-used-for-in-sherry\/\">\u201cflor\u201d wines<\/a>\u00a0in the early second half of the century, opened a chance for the Extractores to go about aging their own wines,\u00a0<strong>putting great pressure on the Almacenistas<\/strong>\u00a0which were used to supply the full sherry production to the traders who, in contrast, gradually restructured to\u00a0<strong>take control<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0<strong>entire winemaking process<\/strong>. As exports of younger wines increased, the\u00a0<strong>Almacenistas\u2019 power decreased<\/strong>. Used to the \u2018simpler\u2019 a\u00f1ada style wine production, many could not keep up with the higher costs essential to setting up the Solera Systems. Jos\u00e9 Ruiz-Berdejo, a secretary of the local Court of Justice, started cultivating the vines of the family\u2019s state, named Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Esperanza, in his spare time.
