According to <a href=\"https:\/\/lustau.es\/en\/news\/sergio-martinez-recognized-for-the-seventh-time-as-best-fortified-winemaker-in-the-world\/\">Sergio Mart\u00ednez,  Lustau Cellar Master<\/a>, \u201cearly in the year we recorded unusually abundant rainfall\u2014<strong>between 800 and 900 liters per square meter (10.7 ft2), <\/strong>with some areas reaching up to 1,000.\u201d This was a dramatic contrast to the previous years, when the region had fallen far below the historic average of 600\u2013620 l\/m\u00b2. The <strong>albariza <\/strong>soils, known for their superb moisture-retaining capacity, absorbed and stored the rain, setting the stage for a generous crop.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/lustau.es\/en\/blog\/albariza-queen-of-soils-in-the-sherry-region\/\">albariza soil,<\/a> a predominant factor in the sherry region<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">However, summer conditions soon turned threatening. The region experienced a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures nearing 40\u202f\u00b0C (104\u202f\u00b0F) and many tropical nights\u2014those with minimums above 20\u202f\u00b0C (68\u202f\u00b0F). \u201cThere was an almost complete absence of dew at night, which is so important for the plant\u2019s hydration during the final phase of ripening,\u201d noted C\u00e9sar Salda\u00f1a, president of the Consejo Regulador.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Those conditions created the perfect breeding ground for mildew, a fungal disease not typically problematic in Jerez. \u201cThis was an unprecedented outbreak in the region\u2019s recent history,\u201d emphasized Salda\u00f1a. It is estimated that fungal disease affected 40\u201350% of the overall crop across the region.<\/p>\n<h2>ONE OF THE SMALLEST HARVESTS IN FIFTEEN YEARS<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">The result: an extremely short harvest. \u201cProduction has dropped more than 40% compared to the 2024 harvest,\u201d confirmed Salda\u00f1a. That makes it one of the lightest harvests since the mid-2000s. While early projections expected a generous vintage, the<strong> fungal pressure and intense heat compromised ripening, <\/strong>cluster weight, and\u2014in some cases\u2014grape integrity.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Still, in <strong>well-managed vineyards,<\/strong> the outcome was far more positive. At <strong>Lustau, preventive fungicide treatments were applied early in anticipation of the wet spring.<\/strong> \u201cWe took precautions and treated the vineyard so that mildew wouldn\u2019t take hold, and it worked,\u201d says Mart\u00ednez.<strong> Their resulting yields were only 15% lower than in 2024<\/strong>\u2014well below the regional average. \u201cWe can consider ourselves fortunate,\u201d he adds, \u201cespecially since our grapes, as in every year, were excellent\u2014with an average Baum\u00e9 degree above 12.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lustau.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Toni.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Toni Caraballo, Lustau\u2019s Vineyards Foreman, oversees the daily care and work across both of the estate\u2019s vineyards<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>FEWER GRAPES, BUT HIGHER QUALITY<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">This natural sugar level was one of the key positives of the vintage. \u201cWe should highlight the final ripeness levels\u2014around 12.5\u00b0 Baum\u00e9\u2014and the great health of the fruit,\u201d Salda\u00f1a noted, <strong>\u201cwhich points to musts of high quality.\u201d<\/strong> So while volume was limited, the quality of the harvest in certain areas offers cautious optimism.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">As is customary, the harvest progressed gradually across the region, <strong>starting in the warmer inland vineyards and ending later along the cooler, coastal pagos.<\/strong> Despite the heat, night harvesting helped preserve freshness\u2014especially in grapes destined for biologically aged wines. Meanwhile, grapes for sweet wines like <strong>moscatel <\/strong>and <strong>pedro xim\u00e9nez were handpicked and sun-dried using the traditional \u2018asoleo\u2019 method.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>A LESSON IN VINEYARD CARE AND FORESIGHT<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">One of the key takeaways from this harvest is the importance of <strong>attentive vineyard management throughout the growing cycle.<\/strong> \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that caring for the vines is essential to achieving the best quality musts,\u201d says Mart\u00ednez. In Lustau\u2019s case, he credits his team\u2019s disciplined fieldwork: \u201cI would highlight the excellent work done in terms of fertilization and viticultural practices\u2014maintaining, renewing, and replanting vines with a focus on improving yields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lustau.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SMV.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The severity of the mildew outbreak will likely serve as a turning point for the region. Many growers were caught off guard, as the fungus has rarely been an issue in such an arid climate. Going forward, prevention will become a more central strategy in vineyard management.<\/p>\n<h2A RESILIENT FUTURE: ALBARIZA REHYDRATED, SOLERA SUSTAINED<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">Despite the challenges, the <strong>2025 vintage leaves behind a valuable legacy: rehydrated soils.<\/strong> \u201cAfter about five years of drought, this year\u2019s abundant rainfall allowed the albariza to replenish its inner moisture,\u201d explains Mart\u00ednez. \u201cSo, if we get even an average amount of rainfall next year, the vines will have enough reserves to deliver a high-quality, well-balanced 2026 crop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">With lessons learned, roots nourished, and eyes turned cautiously to the sky, the sherry region enters the next growing season with quiet determination\u2014and a renewed commitment to protecting its most precious resource: the vineyard.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The Regulatory Council\u2014which oversees the designations of origin that bring together <strong>1,750 grape growers and around 100 wineries across the region<\/strong>\u2014has also reminded the public that sherry wines and Manzanilla de Sanl\u00facar have a unique advantage: their quality and availability on the market are not tied to a single harvest.<strong> Thanks to the criaderas and solera system, bodegas can compensate for shorter or more difficult vintages by drawing from more generous one<\/strong>s\u2014such as 2024, which was \u201cespecially abundant.\u201d<br \/>\nThis aging model, based on the dynamic blending of multiple vintages over time, safeguards the continuity and character of sherry wines while preserving the diversity of styles that define the Jerez region.<\/p>\n<h2>THESE WERE THE NUMBERS AS OF 09\/03\/2025<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">Quantities crushed and average alcohol levels obtained since the beginning of the harvest up to the present date.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"
