As the low abv trend continues to grow in momentum, highball cocktails have been gaining visibility on cocktail menus across the globe. Evolving from the tried-and-true classics like the Moscow Mule, this new class of highball offerings have a more sophisticated and personalized touch, creating a much more memorable experience versus the highballs created during the pre and post prohibition era. The Albarizas cocktail is a wonderful example of this, which pulls inspiration from the Moscow Mule by swapping out manzanilla in place of vodka, while adding a splash of elderflower liqueur to compliment the ginger beer. Our version of the Albarizas uses Vermut Lustau Dry, which uses manzanilla wine as its base wine and doubles down on the herbaceous notes by working in concert with the elderflower liqueur. Try a sip of this reworked classic and you may never go back!

WHO INVENTED THE ALBARIZAS COCKTAIL?

The Albarizas cocktail was invented by bartender Fermin Blas Ruiz in Madrid in the spring of 2017.

WHAT GLASS IS AN ALBARIZAS COCKTAIL SERVED IN?

The Albarizas is served in a traditional highball glass but could be served in a wine glass as well.

WHAT VERMOUTH IS THE BEST SHERRY FOR AN ALBARIZA COCKTAIL?

Any dry vermouth will work in an Albarizas cocktail. It is important that the vermouth is dry because the original recipe for the Albarizas calls for Manzanilla wine, which is bone dry and pungent. Our take features Vermut Lustau Dry, a vermouth crafted with a delicate, yet complex, dry and salty manzanilla aged in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Thanks to its profound herbaceous notes with a subtle citrusness, enhances the classy “flor” background on the nose and combining perfectly with the elderflower liquor. This vermouth is also bone dry, fresh, and slightly briny, full of sea breeze scents and nutty hints. Bitter and clean with a long, crisp, and refreshing aftertaste, replicating the sensations white spirits such as gin or vodka may have without the alcoholic punch the latter also provide.
