The Carajillo cocktail is a simple, yet bold cocktail that masterfully blends the deep intensity of coffee with the warming kick of brandy de Jerez. Originating in Spain and later popularized in Latin America, this drink has become a beloved after-dinner staple, known for its simplicity, strength, and satisfying flavor. At its core, a Spanish Carajillo is a cocktail made with hot coffee and a shot of liquor, traditionally brandy or rum. In Mexico, however, the drink took on a new identity with the use of Licor 43, a sweet, vanilla-and-citrus flavored Spanish liqueur that transforms the drink into a velvety, aromatic experience. Our version pays homage to the original Spanish version, using Lustau Brandy Solera Gran Reserva Finest Selection. This is a must try for any Espresso Martini lover!

WHAT ARE THE ORIGINS OF THE CARAJILLO?
The history of the Carajillo cocktail is a rich blend of folklore, military tradition, and cultural evolution, stretching from colonial-era Cuba to modern-day Spain and Mexico. The Carajillo is believed to have originated in Cuba during the Spanish period (late 19th century). According to popular legend, Spanish soldiers stationed in Cuba would mix their coffee with rum before going into battle. This potent combination was said to give them “coraje”, the Spanish word for “courage.” The adapted, diminutive form, “carajillo”, came to represent this quick mix of coffee and liquor – a small but energizing drink to steel one’s nerves. After Cuba, the Carajillo found its way to mainland Spain, where it became a popular working-class drink, especially in regions like Catalonia and Madrid. In these areas, the liquor of choice shifted to brandy or anisette, depending on local tastes. Spanish baristas often prepared Carajillos with a bit of flair—flaming the spirit before pouring in the coffee, both to warm the liquor and add a bit of theater to the ritual.
WHY BRANDY IS BEST IN A CARAJILLO COCKTAIL?
Brandy is a great choice for a Carajillo cocktail, especially in its traditional Spanish form, because it complements the flavor of coffee while adding depth, warmth, and a smooth kick. Its rich flavor profile of dried fruits and nuts, oak and spice, vanilla, and caramel harmonize perfectly with coffee. Additionally, brandy is known for its silky, warming finish, without the harsh bite of other spirits. This gentle warmth gives the drink its characteristic “courageous” edge without overwhelming the palate. Coffee has acidity and bitterness, and brandy’s fruity sweetness and mellow body balances those out without masking the coffee’s character.
